Waterhouse get by Highgate 1-0

Lynch Park, Buff Bay: Waterhouse squeezed by Highgate one goal to nil in their primer league game at Lynch Park yesterday despite ending the game with ten players.

The lone goal was scored by Peter Keys in the ninth minute from the penalty spot.

In a game dominated by Highgate, Waterhouse took the early lead as Highgate went down early via the route of a penalty. Waterhouse Carlos Barrett shot from just outside the penalty area was handled by a defender and referee Gawayne Scott who was on spot pointed to the penalty spot. The resultant kick by Peter Keyes had to be taken twice as the penalty area was encroached. Highgate custodian was beaten by the well placed kick to his right (twice).

Highgate tried to get back in the game through Horace James as he moved down the right flank and squared the ball to Dennis Neish whose shot was blocked to Richard Orrett as his shot went just centimetres off the left upright going out for a goal kick.

Waterhouse launched a few attacks through Gary McIntosh, Keyes, Loxley Thomas and Carlos Barrett but found Barrington James hard to penetrate.

There was keen battle between the Highgate’s Gawayne Speed (20) and Waterhouse Carlos Barrett (20) and the number eight’s Waterhouse Loxley Thomas and Highgate Richard Orrett as the half came to a close with Waterhouse still leading.

The second half saw Highgate attacking in all quarters but failing to finish as Orrett, Speed, Anthowe Dawkins, Horace James and Dennis Neish but an alert Kelso Cousins kept them at bay. Waterhouse attacked through Adrian King, Thomas, Desmond Breakenridge and Romaine Barnes but Anthowe Dawkins playing his captains role kept them at bay.

Waterhouse Barret was denied when his shot went into the side netting from a Breakenridge pass. They were reduced to ten players when Loxley Thomas received his second caution and was sent to the showers early by referee Gawayne Scott for an infringement.

Highgate got a number of free kicks that were low but custodian Cousins was equal to the task getting low to hold as the game ended with Waterhouse wining one goal to nil.

Losing coach Michael Smith conceded “The whole team had a bad day today; we had some chanced but did not put them away”.

Winning coach Donovan Duckie was pleased “We had good control in the early stage of the game and we created the opportunity for that penalty and made use of it. We know that they concede goals in the first fifteen minutes and we worked on that and it worked for us. Highgate played well in patches”.
