Mr Kris Mr Kris The Portland Tribunal

Bent Kristensen, affectionately known as Mr Kris marched to the beat of a different drummer. And marched he did. Near and far from his modest offices in the Singer Building, it was a common, and daily site, to see Kris shuffling along with his vast bag of paperwork containing data for the array of small businesses his GBS company represented.

That bag also contained infinite detail on the numerous causes for the betterment of Port Antonio for which Kris was the standard bearer. For those of us with micro businesses in the community, Kris was the guy that took the worry out of such things as government compliance for everything from taxes to license renewal. There was first his gentle reminder and then, as deadlines approached, the reminders would increase in intensity until you finally caved in and took care of the matter.

It was the same in his quest on various projects and issues critical to Port Antonio and Portland. His ploy was simple: start out with a gentle inquiry, and then wear them down with repeated calls, letters and phone calls or whatever else it took to get the desired result.

It’s true that some of us joked about Kris’ persistent qualities and maybe found it hard to find time for him on some of those busy days. But I dare say… not one of us ever doubted for a moment his integrity, motivation and desire to serve his clients and community to the fullest.

Kris was many things to many people: business advisor, community activist, television personality, accountant, employer, historian and Remembrance Day poppy vendor. I am proud to say that Kris was my friend.

Born in Denmark, no one I ever met was more devoted and sincere about serving his adopted country and community so fully.

Rest in Peace Mister Kris!

Bent Jakob Kristensen was Treasurer of the Portland Chamber of Commerce. Born in Denmark on July 22, 1934, Bent died Nov. 11, 2011 believed due to internal injuries and complications from being hit by a taxi near the Old Marina some weeks earlier.

Port Antonio has lost a champion and hero!
