Horace Burey who was in third position up to three kilometres took over the early leaders and sped away home before the rest of the pack. He said “the heat was very hot but it was just training that made me get over to become number one. I was relaxed and enjoying myself and I need sponsors and they need to come onboard and sponsor the runners so we can go on and get to the Olympics”.
Arieta found the heat a problem but enjoyed the race “The course was very good but the heat was very hot and I am sorry that the other top runners were not here but I enjoyed the course and the race”.
Hugh Lawson CEO National Health Fund was pleased “this is the first of our five k’s and there were of a number of teams with young people and we have grown over fifty percent over last year. We are pleased with the turn out and we will be back next year. We engaged in 5k’s to reduce the health burden on nation and it seems to be paying off. We are engaging the public in physical activities in carrying out our mandate to reduce the health burden and developing healthy life styles” he said.
Race director Alfred Francis “the athletes were enthused and there were a number of walkers and runners over last year and the interest and participation is growing. The children have turned out and have done well” he said.
Dominic Powell was send for the male in 17 minutes 28 seconds and Damion Wiggan 17 minutes 59 seconds as Karlene Blagrove 20 minutes 43 seconds and Hannah Barnes 21 minutes 18 seconds were second and third respectively.
Titchfield High School won the group section for male and female.
