Toms Hope, Portland: Dozens of supporters of the opposing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) on Sunday took to the streets at Toms Hope in Portland, demanding the removal of their councilor, Margaret Phillips as they claim she is a non-performer.

The placard bearing residents are adamant that Phillips, who is councilor for the Fellowship division, needs to be replaced ahead of the upcoming Local government elections, as she is a non-performer.

One of the protesters Danny White said “The protest action is to send a clear message”, “said, who spoke on behalf of the placard bearing protestors. “We are sending a message to those trying to thwart the democratic process, as we are the people and our voices must be heard. We will not accept any form of arrogance and dictatorship, and we want to be able to choose a candidate of our choice, who will serve us well.”

The protestors did not reveal, who would be their candidate of choice, however, it is understood that four persons have already applied to JLP for the seat to replace Phillips.

Phillips defeated Benny White in the 2007 local government elections, less than a year after White switched allegiance from the JLP to the Peoples National Party and became Mayor.

The protestors are insisting that Phillips be removed for the JLP to stand any real chance of retaining that seat, which they fear could be won easily by White who she defeated in the 2007 poll 1228 votes to White’s 1104.
